Mountaineer Week

Distinguished Service Award,

awarded and nominated by program coordinator, Sonja Wilson

As a member of the media/marketing committee, I had the opportunity to work on one of the largest projects at my university, Mountaineer Week. The 2018 celebration was the 70th anniversary of the spirit week meant to raise school spirit and celebrate the history of West Virginia. I worked with local media, especially the Daily Athenaeum, to get coverage of events and promote the weeks activities.

I also had the opportunity to run the charity portion of the weeks "American Idol” style singing competition, Mountaineer Idol Gives Back. I coordinated a donation collection effort for new stuffed animals and silent auction, with donations from local business, to benefit WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. Additionally, I coordinated the collection of recyclables to be matched by a donation from Coca-Cola to benefit the local nonprofit Jessie’s Pals.

I was extremely grateful to receive the Distinguished Service Award, awarded to one student each year who goes "above and beyond" to make the week a success.

In order to connect the university the Morgantown community, I put focus on reaching out to local community organizations, along with those on campus. I was able to get a community collection site at a local church and partner with an elementary school to get their student counsel involved. I worked closely with the student counselor advisor to help the students set up a collection effort at the school. These student and church faculty were then invited to the reveal of the collection effort to take place on Oct. 29.

I also organized a group of freshman journalism students to help run the event and drive collection efforts and wrote a variety of media releases to promote the event.

In the end we collected nearly 300 stuffed animals and raised $1,120 for WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.
